Iphone Tethering? 2 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello. Great site! I have a quick question, I was wondering if anyone knew the answer. I read that the iphone 3.0 upgrade is supposed to support tethering. I want to use my iphone as a modem for my laptop and was wondering if I could do it?

If not, any idea when AT&T will officially support this? I realize this probably a completely random question but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere else.

Thanks guys!

Iphone Tethering, although not supported by AT&T, can be done by following the instructions from Engadget posted here:

Welcome to the Forums, Gabriel. I hope this helps.

Gabriel, I'm sorry if I can't offer you much information about using an Iphone as a modem for a laptop computer, but it does sound like a good idea. I've wondered if cellular phones can be used as modems.

Yes, certain phones do support this. Many of the Verizon Smartphones come with the VZaccess software, which you can use to hook up your phone for data usage. I had a Samsung i760 that I used for this. The Samsung i760 was a great phone that used Windows Mobile.

Rob, does the phone connect to the notebook computer via USB or Firewire? Might a cellular phone be a viable option for connecting a desktop computer to the Internet?

USB. Yes, you could use this for a desktop, but bandwidth becomes an issue especially if you download a lot. I know Verizon and many others have a bandwidth limit, going over this limit makes it quite expensive currently I believe verizon charges $.25 / MB over so you can imagine how quickly the bill can climb.

Honestly, Verizon DSL now goes up to 7mb/sec for about $40 per month, making it blow away Comcast in terms of price, in my opinion
